The Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge

Sanibel's J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge is world famous, and absolutely worth the visit! Located on Sanibel-Captiva Road, the Refuge has eight miles of walking/biking trails that can fill your day, along with incredible bird watching opportunities. You can watch Roseate Spoonbills feeding in the ponds, as wall as a gator or two sunning along the road. The Refuge also offers tram rides as well as daily events for adults and children. You can read more about the Refuge Here, and watch my short video (left). The Refuge also has an informative Welcome Center that tells the history of Ding Darling's incredible life as well as and the history of the Refuge. The Welcome Center has lots of information, along with a gift shop and walking/driving tour maps, and scheduled daily activities.

The Refuge also includes the Bailey Tract, located off Tarpon Bay Road. The Tract is 100 acres with walking/biking trails and incredible wildlife. You can read more about the Bailey Tract Here.

"Ding Darling" was a well-known political cartoonist, as well as an environmentalist. He was instrumental in getting President Truman to sign an Executive Order that created the Refuge in 1945. It wasn't until 1967 that the Refuge was renamed in honor of J.N. "Ding" Darling. Today the Wildlife Refuge consists of more than 6,400 acres, with 2,800 acres being designated by Congress as a Federal Wildlife Preserve. Ding darling wildlife refuge

Wildlife Drive will give you and your family an experience you will talk about for years. Your children will never forget their visit! The views are spectacular, especially at low tide when the birds flock to the sand bars to eat.

Definitely put a trip to Sanibel's Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on your vacation schedule! If you're reading this from miles away, you can pull up live wildlife cameras from the Refuge Here.

Searching for the perfect Sanibel or Captiva pet condo!

You have decided that an Island Condo is a great option for your Island home.  You ask your trusted Real Estate advisor to put together a list of properties that meet your criteria. The list is a good one and off you go to take a look.  Along the way it comes up that you have a 35 pound dog who will be living in the condo as well.  Stop the presses! Many of the properties on the list are now off the list because of condo Pet Policies.

Sanibel real estate
Sanibel real estate It is not unusual for there to be an outright ban on pets in condo complexes. That is actually the easy stance. Some associations require to meet the dog.  Some allow you to buy into a complex with a dog but once it dies, there is a “no replacement” policy. It is also relatively common for a condo to allow owners to have pets, however, tenants may not. Often those condos that allow owners to have pets, also have a weight limit and/or limit the number of pets an owner may have.
Here is where it starts to get tricky. The association, which is working to have a safe and quiet place for all, has determined that smaller dogs - under 30 pounds usually, are a better option. The tricky part is that your dog weighs 35 pounds and is a breed that is small for the weight.
Bottom line – if Condo living is your desire, and you have a pet – call me! I can help.
